In Summary

Ann Thumbi of Nyeri County and Joy Muthoni Mwangi of Nairobi County have both been summoned to appear before the party’s disciplinary committee on June 20.

The United Democratic Alliance has accused two nominated Members of County Assembly of betraying party loyalty by promoting the interests of a rival political party and encouraging defections.

Ann Thumbi of Nyeri County and Joy Muthoni Mwangi of Nairobi County have both been summoned to appear before the party’s disciplinary committee on June 20.

The party says their conduct shows allegiance to the Democracy for Citizens Party and is a violation of both the Political Parties Act and the UDA constitution.

Thumbi is accused of wearing branded merchandise of DCP during an event on May 15 and later attending a rally on May 24 where she reportedly encouraged the public to join DCP and leave UDA.

"Your attendance of a DCP public rally on the 24th May 2025, where you endorsed and encouraged members of the public to join that party and leave the UDA party," is evidence of disloyalty,” read the statement

Muthoni is facing similar accusations, including a social media post that UDA claims promoted DCP.

"Your message carried on your Facebook page clearly and by implication demonstrated your association and support of the said DCP party and encouraged members to leave the UDA party," read the committee’s letter to her.

According to UDA, these actions amount to gross misconduct and breach of discipline.

The party cited its internal rules that forbid members from supporting or promoting another party’s policies or interests.

It added that such conduct also fits the description of resignation under the Political Parties Act.

The disciplinary committee said, “Your actions outlined above amount to incitement of party members to leave the UDA party and total disregard of the party constitution, rules, and the code of conduct.”

The MCAs are expected to respond to the allegations in person or through their lawyers.

UDA warned that if the charges are confirmed, the committee will recommend actions such as suspension or expulsion and submit its decision to the party’s National Executive Committee.
